Ben has suffered injuries to his feet and is partially crippled. He has made port admiral, but hates the constant string of petitioners and the paper work that he must sort through daily. He learns of the capture of Napoleon at Waterloo and the plans to exile him on St. Helena. He and Tom lay plans to get the Admiralty to send them off to escort Napoleon to St. Helena. Aboard ship Ben asks the little Emperor some pointed questions and gets some equally surprising answers. Then it is back to the daily grind of port admiral.

Eventually Ben retires and tours England looking for a place to settle. He has become a wealthy man and finds a place on the south coast close to where he was born. He takes on several local people to help him manage the property and Stewart Giles, his steward from aboard ship, joins him.

It is Stewart who coaxes him into writing his life story. His first lieutenant, Thomas Murphy, joins him too.

Eventually the older people become lonely and Ben sets out to adopt a boy from the orphanage where he was confined as a child. But the orphanage is now for girls only. He falls for a shy young girl and takes her home to keep the family happy. She brings a huge baggage of troubles and is every bit as much of a challenge as any ship at sea in a Levanter.

Ben finds troubles with his ship wright business and must endure travel and embarrassment over the false claims made by impostors. He is also caught in the cross hairs of an evil woman known as Lula Mae and must tread carefully to avoid disaster.

Even worse are the troubles of his friend, Tom. He has remarried after the death of his first wife and he has taken on a “she witch.” Ben travels to Ireland several times with Tom. One fine day they set out on the channel in their little sail boat. A storm comes up, the boat capsizes and they two men are separated. Ben ends up in a nunnery in Brittany and nearly starves before he can heal and escape. One adventure leads to the next and finally Tom dies. Ben takes him home to be buried on his farm.

One day as Ben sits in his back yard overlooking the Channel, a handsome young man arrives. He is deemed an impostor when he claims to be Ben’s son. But after a time, the young man knows of things that no impostor could possibly know. He has the ring that Ben had given to Annie and her letters as well. Ben accepts him as his son.

Young Ben quickly falls in love with Ben’s adopted daughter and the two marry. When Ben knows that he is dying, he asks to have a suitable burial at sea, a Viking’s funeral. Thus ends a saga covering some sixty years of English history. Enjoy!

Admiral Rundel The Rundel Series Book 9 edition by N Beetham Stark Literature Fiction eBooks

M Beetham Stark gives Little Pee in the Bottle a fitting and well-deserved reward for a life and level of heroism seen in few others of his generation. The culmination of willingness and opportunity make for a man who was portrayed as being there and observing as well as helping make key decisions. Intertwining the lives and experiences of Lord Nelson, Lord Castlereagh, Lord Melville, etc, into the life of this young man who becomes great is excellent reading. Reading all 9 volumes gives Rundel so much life, one wants to become close friends and sail under his leadership. "Admiral Rundel" is a most fitting last book in an excellent series. If you like late 18th/early 19th century sailing sagas, the series is for you. In this case, cost of the books belies the excellent read and historic side notes. We'll done Mr. Stark.

Admiral Rundel The Rundel Series Book 9 edition by N Beetham Stark Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I waited before I commented on tis book as an end to a series. My conclusion is it ended on a high note and was an uplifting ending to a wonderful piece of history with a complex story of a hero.worth the read.
The entire series was very readable and a great story.. Beetham Stark should be proud of his work and I look forward to his next project. His knowledge of the life at sea with the Royal Navy of that era. That was the solid foundation of the Rundel series. His work was very accurate and must have taken a significant amount of time and effort assembling the history of that era. The results showed throughout the series. Well Done!
Excellent ending to a series of a sailors life. What a life! I wish this series could go on and on. I think that readers of this type will enjoy every book in this series, especially Admiral Rundel. I would recommend that the reader start with the first book in the series to this last one to really enjoy the book.
Glad to be finished with the series ( don't know why I ever read them all). These were the most poorly edited books that I have ever read. Gave it three stars because it was the last in the series and I won't feel compelled to read any more of this author. Sorry Mr. Stark, but you should have proof read your books before they went to print.
The first part of the book did indeed deal with the admiral at sea and was as expected, racy and adventurous. Then the book left the sea and dealt with the problems of what happened to seamen who were no longer needed when peace was achieved. The social outcomes and attitudes of civilians to these ex-sailors was well described and thought provoking at both officer and ableseaman levels. Too, the "who do you know" methods of promotion were fully described as were some disastrous results of the system !
I ladmire how this series end with a human touch, still some impossible things, but going back to where things started and the odd final explnation of Annie, which almost mirror's his own life.
I continued with this series because Ms Stark's strength is that of a story-teller. However, it read as if spoken to a word recognition programme. Examples are the use of 'site' instead of 'sight', 'whales' instead of 'wails' and many many more. Americanisms and anachronisms abound as others have pointed out - I'm sure gay was not common usage for homosexual in the nineteenth century.
Throughout the series, background historical research is poor. Rundel read Dickens when Dickens was just born, he visited places in Australia that didn't exist under those names at the time etc. A little work with Wikipedia would have gone a long way to clearing up these mistakes.
Despite these strictures I enjoyed the story-telling.
